I’ve used different shampoos and conditioners since going natural. Since my scalp gets dry, I always try to get products that will add moisture and keep my hair hydrated, because I’m too lazy to wash more than once a week - though I should probably.

That being said, I could always count on good products being as such: a shampoo that lathers good and cleans my hair and a conditioner that detangles and softens my hair. I’ve found great conditioners that’ve worked and I absolutely use to the very end, but shampoos are another story. Usually, the shampoo lathers and rinses out. I used to do it twice but I realized that it was kind of too much for my scalp and it almost was itchy before I conditioned it. So I started to just shampoo once with a thick lather and then rinse and finish up.

I was fine with that, and deep conditioning really helped with making sure my hair wasn’t too dry. This might sound like just talk but I’m getting to the point.

I’ve heard of shampoos that didn’t really have sulfates in them, which is the ingredient that does the lathering. But I had never tried it before. I don’t use super foamy cleansers on my face and it should be the same for my scalp. It’s super drying to do so. So oil based or gel based cleansers that are minimum to none on sulfates are my cleansers, but never looked at my scalp for a change.

Now, I didn't come here to say I picked Rahua for this change. I didn't. I didn't pick Rahua as my sample choice. It was sent because Sephora ran out of the Verb sample I actually picked. I'm glad it did.

If you've never tried a Rahua product before, the brand is a vegan brand that states that it uses “sustainably sourced ingredients” with the star ingredient Rahua oil, also known as ungurahua oil. The oil helps to nourish the hair and scalp while also providing antioxidant benefits.

The shampoo is like a gel, an amber color, I believe from the oil. It has a distinct scent which is the “Rahua scent” which is the Palo Santo oil - an earthy warm scent that I enjoyed. The conditioner is a cream color that also has the Rahua scent with the Palo Santo oil scent. It was an enjoyable cleanse with both products.

Surprisingly, the shampoo was able to cover my thick hair and scalp and felt nice. At first I thought it wasn’t working either but it wasn’t until afterwards that I realized that it wasn’t going to lather. Since it’s an oil shampoo without sulfate, it really felt like my hair was cleansed afterwards. I didn’t have much to shampoo twice but I didn’t really need to. Sometimes, if I shampoo more than once, my scalp feels itchy and my hair dries out quicker. After shampooing, my hair already felt soft and hydrated.

The real test was the conditioner. Anyone with thick hair knows that nickel/dime size of products don’t do much. But I was able to coat my hair and it has a great slip helping to detangle my hair easily. After completely rinsing my hair, it was easy to continue my routine and style my hair. My hair felt soft through the week and wasn’t as dry as usual which I love. I’ve tried plenty of shampoos and conditioners since going natural in 2016 and these are really top tier for me right now.

Both products are available at Sephora and on the Rahua site for $34 USD for the shampoo and $36 USD for conditioner. It’s a lot more than I’ve paid for other shampoo and conditioner, but considering, I would splurge. If I only had to pick one of them, I think I would go with the shampoo. My scalp doesn’t feel dry and a lot less flakes. In the end, I’m glad that I got the samples and I decided to try them.

Until next post,

XOXO
